A medieval card engine-builder where workers cover building requirements and wages eat your coins.
Who it's for
You like cozy engine-builders and number-matching puzzles in a half-hour box. Great as a thoughtful two-player game.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want lots of conflict or a strong story. It is a solitary-feeling optimization game, with a market row as the only real interaction.
Vibe's take
Calm, puzzly and economical. You are always matching skill numbers and counting coins, and the best turns come from noticing that a worker fits two buildings. Little interaction beyond snatching cards from the row.
In The Builders: Middle Ages you run a small medieval construction business and every card is either a building or a worker. Each building asks for carpentry, masonry, architecture and tilery points, and you assign workers with matching skills to cover them. Workers cost money to put on a site, and finished buildings pay out points and coins, so the whole game is a balancing act between spending and earning. You start with 10 ecu and an apprentice, five workers and five buildings lie face up, and each turn you take a few actions to hire, start or finish. A tidy little engine-builder with a cozy, builder-y charm.
