Roll nine picture dice and make up a story that uses every image.
Who it's for
You like telling stories, doing improv, or entertaining kids on a rainy afternoon. Also useful on trips, since it needs no table at all.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want a game with real winners, scores and strategy. This is a storytelling prompt more than a competition.
Vibe's take
Loose, silly and improvised. The fun is in the leaps of logic, and the table usually ends up laughing at someone's creative stretch. Pacing is entirely up to the group.
Rory's Story Cubes is nine dice with pictures instead of numbers. Roll them, look at what landed, and tell a story that uses all nine images. A lock, a foot, a pair of scissors, a lightning bolt: your job is to make them fit together somehow, and the more ridiculous the logic, the better. It works for one person, for a handful of friends taking turns, or as a story relay where everyone adds one bit before passing the dice on. There are no real winners unless you decide to hand out points for drama and humor. It is also a decent tool for breaking writer's block or getting kids to talk. Pocket-sized, no setup, no board.
