Pick the piece your opponent has to place, and make sure it is the wrong one for them.
Who it's for
Two people who like short abstract duels and enjoy outwitting one another. A good pick for a coffee table or a trip.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want a bigger or louder game. It is a pure thinking duel for two, and a missed shared trait will cost you.
Vibe's take
Quiet and sneaky, with a pause before every hand-over. The sinking feeling when you realize every remaining piece is dangerous is half the fun.
Quarto is a two-player abstract game with a clever twist: you do not place your own piece, your opponent hands one to you. The board is a four by four grid and the sixteen pieces each have four traits: dark or light, tall or short, round or square, hollow or solid. Whoever completes a row of four sharing at least one trait wins, and the cruel part is that you must give your rival a piece that will not let them do it. Wooden pieces, a short playing time and the odd sinking feeling when you realize every piece is dangerous make this a classic gift for a smart friend.
