Grow a tree card by card to please the forest's tree spirits.
Who it's for
You like quiet, pretty puzzle games and tree-themed art. A good pick for three players or a relaxed evening.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want conflict or drama. It's a tranquil game of placing cards, with nearly no interaction.
Vibe's take
Calm and puzzly. Each placement is a small spatial decision with quiet satisfaction. Nothing explodes, but you're happily lost in your own little forest.
Kodama: The Tree Spirits asks you to grow a tree that will make its little spirits happy. Over three growing seasons you place cards onto your growing tree in clever arrangements, adding branches, flowers and insects, and taking care to leave room to keep growing. At the end of each season a Kodama awards points for how well your tree matches its taste, so the mix of what you plant matters as much as how it is laid out. The art is lovely and the mood is calm, with a quiet puzzle underneath. It is from the designer of Kigi, plays in about half an hour, and is gentle enough to share around the whole table.
