Build Cleopatra's palace in 3D, cheat to build faster, and hope you are not the most corrupt architect.
Who it's for
You like colorful tabletop spectacle and light cheating mechanics with a bite. A family-weight game that still has some edge.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want deep strategy or hate any kind of push-your-luck tension. The crocodile can punish an otherwise good build.
Vibe's take
Lively and cheeky. There is a satisfying tactile thrill in watching the palace rise, and a constant nervous glance at everyone's amulet count. The crocodile is a fun looming threat.
Cleopatra and the Society of Architects, by Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc, has you building a real three-dimensional palace for the queen while quietly cheating to build it faster. Players are architects competing to be the richest. Taking shady shortcuts and dealing in dodgy materials speeds you up, but each dirty deal hands you a cursed Corruption Amulet. When Cleopatra finally strolls into her finished palace, the most corrupt architect is seized and fed to her crocodile, so greed has a price. Everyone else counts their wealth, and the richest survivor wins. It's a chunky, colorful family game with a mean streak, and it looks great on the table.
