Carcassonne's tile-laying moved to a sunny archipelago, with bananas, fish and trading ships instead of castles.
Who it's for
You enjoy Carcassonne but want a fresh theme and slightly different scoring. Good for two or three players who like gentle competition.
Not for you if…
You want something very different from Carcassonne. The core is the same tile-and-meeple structure, just with new goods.
Vibe's take
Relaxed with a little elbow. You place a tile, grin if it fits and quietly groan when someone steals a good spot. Scoring comes in bursts as goods are shipped out.
Carcassonne: South Seas keeps the tile-laying you know, but swaps the castles and roads for a tropical archipelago. Each turn you add a tile and may place a meeple to claim something on it. Instead of cities and farms, your meeples gather bananas, shellfish and fish, and you then ship those goods to traders in exchange for points. It is the first of the Around the World Carcassonne series and works fine as a stand-alone game. If you like Carcassonne's gentle land grab but want a different set of decisions and a sunnier theme, this scratches that itch.
