A frog-racing card game where you secretly root for one frog and try not to give it away.
Who it's for
Families with younger kids looking for a first taste of hidden-loyalty games, plus Knizia fans who enjoy his lighter designs.
Not for you if…
You want a game with real long-term strategy, since card draws and catch-up mechanics keep outcomes fairly light and unpredictable.
Vibe's take
light, cheerful, quick, sneaky, sweet
In Ribbit, five frogs hop across a shrinking row of lily pads and you already know which one you are secretly rooting for, you just cannot let anyone else find out. Each turn you play a movement card that sends a frog forward or back, and clever catch-up cards specifically boost whichever frog is trailing, so the lead keeps changing hands. Land one frog on a lily pad another frog already occupies and it hops right on top, piling frogs into little stacks as the race gets crowded. Because your loyalty stays hidden until the very end, watching who plays which card becomes its own quiet little bluffing game. Designed by Reiner Knizia, it is a light, cheerful race that plays in about twenty minutes and works well as a first strategy game for younger kids.
