Move your nobles across a medieval England, grab a royal heir and put them on the throne.
Who it's for
A group of five or six history fans who love scheming, politics and a long evening. Perfect for people who like Game-of-Thrones-style intrigue without a fantasy setting.
Not for you ifβ¦
You need a short game, a tidy rules set or a fair fight. It runs for hours, and being the first to fall behind can sting.
Vibe's take
Long, political and scheming, where alliances shift as soon as someone looks stronger. It is the sort of game you will talk about for years: who betrayed whom, and who crowned the wrong king.
Kingmaker is a sprawling game about the Wars of the Roses, England's tangled civil war between 1450 and 1490. A weak king sits on the throne, and powerful noble families use the Lancastrian and Yorkist princes as pawns in their own struggle for power. Each player leads a faction of nobles, moves armies around the map, raises troops, makes deals and tries to get hold of a royal heir and crown him. Everyone wants the last heir alive, so once you have one, you must guard them. It is a long, schemey game from 1974 with dice, events and voting, full of shifting alliances and betrayals.
