Flick your circus hippos into a spinning hoop before it falls.
Who it's for
You have kids from about five who love flicking and racing, and you want a very short, active game before dinner. Great when concentration is short.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want strategy or a game for a mixed-age group where grown-ups need a challenge. It is quick and physical, and some will find it repetitive.
Vibe's take
Fast, noisy and slightly chaotic. Everybody flicks at once, so the table is a blur of small plastic hippos and cheering.
Hula Hippos is a flicking game for the youngest players, based on Maus nach Haus, and the same rules apply with circus hippos in place of mice. One player spins a wooden ring so that it rolls and rotates on the table. While it spins, everybody flicks their hippo tokens with a finger, trying to get them inside the ring just before it slows and falls flat. Any hippo that ends up inside the ring is safely out of your pile, and the first player who has no hippos left wins. A round is over in seconds and the next one begins immediately. It is noisy, wobbly and a good fit for kids who are at the stage of loving flicking things across tables.
