Command legions, cavalry and catapults as a Roman general fighting for the empire.
Who it's for
You grew up with big mass-market conquest games and want a refreshed version for a long evening. Best for a table of four to six who like a bit of conflict.
Not for you ifβ¦
You dislike long, dice-driven conflict or want a modern, balanced Eurogame. Four hours is long when the dice turn against you.
Vibe's take
Big, long and dice-heavy, the kind of conquest game that fills a Saturday afternoon. The battles produce swings, and the shared map invites rivalry and grudges.
Conquest of the Empire is a remake of the 1984 Milton Bradley classic, and it plays like the kind of grand conquest game you may have stared at in a toy store when you were young. You are one of several Roman generals struggling for power in Imperial Rome, spending legions, cavalry and catapults to grab territory and reach your goals. This edition ships with two rule sets. One is close to the original, with the infamous catapult rules fixed, and the other is a newer version based on Martin Wallace's Struggle of Empires. Expect a long evening of dice, armies and a shared map. It will charm nostalgic fans of classic conquest games, though modern gamers may find it dated.
