Gather resources, build temples and armies, and send gods' creatures into battle in a boardgame version of the real-time strategy classic.
Who it's for
You played the video game, or you like long, themed conquest games with lots of miniatures and mythological monsters.
Not for you ifβ¦
You want a short or light game. It takes a good part of an evening and involves a lot of setup and pieces.
Vibe's take
Epic, long and busy, with building, saving up and then sending big stacks of figures to crash together. The dice and cards keep the fights quick.
The video game Age of Mythology gets the full tabletop treatment: you lead an ancient civilization, Greek, Egyptian or Norse, gather resources, build the right buildings and raise armies of warriors, priests, heroes and mythical creatures. Special buildings unlock new unit types and upgrades, and battles are settled with dice and cards that keep the action moving instead of grinding through rows of modifiers. The figures are chunky 3D pieces, so a big fight looks properly dramatic on the table. It is a long, grand strategy game for fans of real-time strategy video games who want to do the same thing face to face. Expect a full evening, plenty of plotting, and a few monsters.
